Getting help to quit
Quitline 13 7848 is a confidential telephone service that can offer information and support to help you quit. Quitline counsellors are experienced, friendly and non-judgemental counsellors. They understand that quitting takes time and will assist you to work out the best strategy for you.
There is no cost involved in using Quitline, other than the cost of a local phone call.
Quitline counsellors understand the quitting process and how to overcome the barriers to successful quitting, and they can provide information on quitting products such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or quitting medication.
Quitline is available:
- Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 8.00 pm
- Saturday 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm
You can also speak to an Aboriginal Quitline counsellor who can offer a tailored quit smoking service for Aboriginal people on 13 7848.
Our Aboriginal counsellors are passionate about assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to make positive changes in their lives and are available to support you by:
- listening to your story
- having a yarn about smoking
- keeping everything that’s yarned about private and confidential
- working with you on a plan to cut down or quit
- following up and supporting you—we call you and it’s free
- providing free resources
- connecting you with local support if you want it
A free interpreter service is available on request. If you have a hearing or speech impairment, you can call the National Relay Service to access Quitline.
What happens when I call Quitline?
When you call Quitline, we will discuss:
- your smoking history
· previous quit attempts
· nicotine dependence
· the triggers that have made quitting difficult
For those who would like ongoing support, counsellors can schedule call-backs as needed to help you stay on track, or you can ring in to get extra help as needed.
Sometimes it can be hard to know where to start, or perhaps talking over the phone may not be for you—that’s okay. You can chat to a Quitline counsellor online. Just as you would over the phone, counsellors will have a confidential conversation with you and can support you through quitting.

My QuitBuddy is a personalised app to help you on your journey to become smoke free. It provides a countdown to your quit attempt and stats to track your quitting progress, such as days smoke free, cigarettes avoided and dollars saved.
